Importance of Proper Grammar Usage Today

Intelligence is not measured solely by his grammar, especially, when English is not his primary language. However, proper grammar usage has become more important nowadays.

Here are reasons why you should take a second look at your grammar.

1. Improper grammar may cause misunderstandings.

Today, some people use English in a way that is grammatically confusing. One popular example is the incorrect usage of "there", "their", and "they're", that distorts the real thought of the sentence.

"There" defines a location.
"They're" is a contraction of they are.
"Their" shows possession.

Other common grammatical errors include double negatives. Here's an example:

"I ain't got no time."

Most people use this to say that they don't have time. However, if we analyze the sentence construction, the double negative in the sentence would mean that the person has time.

Better:
I got no time.
I haven't got time.

Usage of double negatives is not encouraged because it is poor grammar and creates confusion.

Remember: Double negatives mean a positive statement.

2. Employers also check your grammar in social media.

Yes, employers now tend to check social media accounts before hiring. So, make sure that you use correct grammar here and there. You don't know when it will come handy.

Your employers will definitely not be impressed with your poor grammar. But, since you already know about it, better keep a good record of grammatically correct social media posts.

3. Some people consider poor grammar as ignorance.

Have you experienced having an argument in social media? Or have you seen one? Then, you might have also seen some people point out the poor grammar of the other side, which immediately invalidates their argument.

In an online argument, when poor grammar is pointed out, the one who said it immediately claims the ignorance of the other side. Thus, ending the whole argument. Just that easy.

I'll say it once more, fluency and impressive grammar do not measure the totality of intelligence of an individual. But, proper grammar matters in many aspects. There is no harm in learning correct grammar, only benefits.
